Our Stories
Sonia
Sonia McLeod is the author of the autobiography, Rise Up My Beloved. She is also the founder of the 100 Days Walking By Faith journey for which she has also authored the 100 Days Walking By Faith Daily Journal. Hundreds of women have joined Sonia on this amazing 100 days journey that is changing lives.
Sonia’s own journey started at the age of 12. It was at this time that Sonia had an experience with God at a Christian summer camp that changed her life. “No one could convince me that God was not real,” she says of that moment.
Things drastically changed as she entered her teen and young adult years. Life changed for the worse. Running to escape an alcohol and violence filled home, Sonia was a high school drop out, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and living a high-risk lifestyle on the harsh streets of Canada’s largest city, Toronto ON. Over and over again, Sonia was faced with life and death circumstances in a swift downward spiral with a dwindling desire to live. She had no hope.
But soon, she felt the Lord drawing and wooing her back to Him. She began to seek the Lord earnestly. She was reading His Word daily, memorizing scripture, and learning to walk in obedience to Him. Before long, her life was completely changed and, in her own words, she “fell completely in love with Jesus.”
As her walk with the Lord grew, Sonia found herself back in Saskatchewan where she went through more heartbreak, grief, and sorrow from all sides. But through it all, Sonia has remained a steadfast testimony and light of the Lord’s amazing grace.
Today, Sonia is married to Derek McLeod and together they have seven children and several grandchildren. Their vision is to establish a Christ-based rehab center for those struggling with substance abuse which will be called The House of Rahab. She has completed ASIST Suicide Intervention training and is currently working toward obtaining a Social Work degree. In addition, Sonia has developed a website ministry called “My Nehemiah Wall”.
Sonia has a burden for single parents, especially young moms who are struggling, and for marriages that need the passion restored. She truly believes that the key to overcoming is having an intimacy with Jesus Christ which will strengthen and restore all that has been lost. She lives life with the firm belief that His word, His power, and His life is all we need when everything else is falling apart.
Derek
As a young boy, Derek’s parents received the Lord Jesus Christ into their lives and it changed their home. From a home filled with alcohol and violence, Derek’s home was immediately transformed. His father was the first “pentecostal” preacher in the small town they lived in. His father preached on the local AM radio station proclaiming the gospel despite receiving threats of bodily harm and even death. A church was soon started and the miraculous power of God was present.
Derek grew up loving the Lord Jesus Christ and, at the age of six, he led his elderly grand-uncle to the Lord. Although he had grown up as the organist for the Anglican church Derek’s grand-uncle had never come to really know Jesus as Lord and Savior.
When he became a teenager, Derek rebelled against God and became heavily involved in a lifestyle of sexual immorality, drugs and alcohol. That all changed on August 4, 1990 when Derek was gloriously born again into Christ.
Soon after his born again experience, Derek began to lead worship in the same small church that his parents had started. “I became very involved in ministry and I fell in love with the ministry more than Jesus,” says Derek. This led to religious hypocrisy and soon afterward, sexual sin. It wasn’t too long before Derek found himself in rebellion and disobedience to God. For many years, Derek struggled to serve the Lord finding himself going back and forth into the world and the church for several years. “I did not understand that I was trying to live for Christ with a very religious mindset,” recalls Derek. “I was trying to do it all on my own. I was not running to the Lord for my strength.”
In 2007, Derek finally recommitted his life to Christ. It was then that he began to walk in obedience. Not long after this time Derek met and married his wife, Sonia. Since then his walk with Christ has begun to flourish. “The Lord used my wife to speak to my heart about so many things I was unaware of,” says Derek. Although there have been many difficulties along the way, there have also been major changes that have come about only because he has yielded to the Lord. He began to see where he was in bondage. “God opened my eyes to see that I had been in the bondages of religion, pride and sexual immorality,” says Derek. The root for much of it had come from the wound of rejection and abandonment he had suffered as a child and teenager. “God has been faithful,” continues Derek, “to heal and deliver me day after day.”
Derek continues to grow and mature in his Christian walk with the Lord. Teach Me to War is Derek’s first book as a co-author.
