Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
On October 13 we had the opportunity to minister to the people of the Pass Creek Church of God in Allen, South Dakota. Allen is located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. This is also the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre. Pastor Tim and Kim Wardell are a missionary couple with the Pass Creek Church of God who invited us to come and see for ourselves what life was like on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Please keep this place in your prayers. The cry of our heart was “How can we leave now?” Should the Lord make a way, we want to come back here again to minister hope to these precious souls.
The Wounded Knee Massacre
On the morning of December 29, 1890, the U.S. Cavalry troops went into the camp of a group of Lakota who had presented themselves in an act of peaceful surrender… during the process it is claimed that a gun was accidentally discharged … the U.S. Army began shooting at the Lakota which included the use of artillery weaponry. The Lakota warriors tried to fight back, but many had already been stripped of their guns and disarmed.
By the time the massacre was over, more than 250 unarmed Lakota had been killed and 51 left wounded (including 4 men and 47 women and children, some of whom died later); some estimates placed the number of dead as high as 300.
